AI, Student Voice, and Writing Assessment

AI, Student Voice, and Writing Assessment - Guy J. Krueger

This video explores how artificial intelligence can be integrated into writing instruction without sacrificing student voice or core learning outcomes. Rather than using AI simply to produce finished work, students can critically evaluate AI-generated writing, identify what sounds authentic or mechanical, strengthen evidence, and make rhetorical choices that reflect their own style and intentions.

Guy Krueger also examines AI’s potential role in assessment and feedback. AI can help instructors develop customized rubrics and potentially assist with grading, but overreliance on AI by both students and teachers risks weakening the essential relationship between writer, audience, and purpose. A central challenge is the wide variation in AI policies across courses and institutions, which can leave students uncertain about what is permitted. Greater clarity and consistency in AI guidelines will be important as universities determine how these tools should fit into teaching, writing, and assessment.
